Not the first time theyve banned books in America. We didn't commit a holocaust like the nazis ( Well I mean Reagan and the Clinton's did with Iran-Contra and the crack laws but, who's counting?)
It's good to have peer reviewed studies to point to rather than just vibes when fighting those bans, or discussing the subject with people who are underinformed.
Important stuff, but none of the 3 books in the photo for the article are by women of color. And including a Colleen Hoover book as an example is extremely weird. She’s a white woman who writes dark-themed adult romance.
We all knew who the book banners real targets were. LGBTQ was their obvious red herring - just like it was for the 3rd Reich. Jim Crow is still thriving, and heralded by the same yt religious thugs.
Maybe authors of color are selected for publication because their pre-existing victim status would protect them from criticism over the content of their writing? It would provide the publishers with the means of deflecting criticism of the material by claiming it to be a racist attack on the author.
Banning books (for any reason) should always be considered a freedom of speech violation. It doesn't matter if the book has extremist political views in any direction, or if it's absolutely disgusting. Books should never be banned under any circumstance.
That has long been suspected. I'm glad someone has done the study that supported it. It's good that it was peer reviewed, but who was their sample population, sampling procedure, the total involved in the study, etc?
No, I said for a 4yo it’s pornography…
My nephew is gay, my niece is still figuring things out, another niece is trans and my sister in law has been fully closeted for 20 years and thinks no one knows and I love them all for who they are, period
God forbid a white child read a book by a black woman and maybe, IDK, enjoy it? Identify with the protagonist? Learn something new? Not to minimize this destructive racist BS but: Heaven forfend (clutches pearls)
So rather than being racist you’re a transphobe? Not exactly winning any points there. Gender Queer isn’t a book for kids. Even the author has stated that it isn’t intended for kids.
Drag queens aren’t even gay most of the time, buddy. If your kid is running and taking books from the adult section that’s a parenting problem, not a book problem. Why isn’t the Bible banned from libraries then too? It has stories that go over sisters getting their dad drunk and raping him.
This is just one of many. The "banning pornography" BS is nothing but a cover to ban books on black history, feminism, anti-authoritarianism, and so much more.
Dang keep forgetting (an edit image after feature would be the ahimsa bomb here @bsky.app ;)

Not sure if the QT code still works and if not would love to be able to take it down without deleting rest o the Brooklyn Public Library Banned Books 📚 Options
The bans are always enacted by ignorant, racist, misogynist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, intolerant, gap-toothed, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, troglodyte pseudo-Christian rednecks who would ban Christ himself if he actually showed up today. What else are they going to ban?
None of the books pictured are being “taught” to children. Plenty of examples of book bans hitting school libraries and the librarians just scratching their heads because none of the books are present in the library.
Ironically, they warn of children being "indoctrinated" during the week by being exposed to reality, then send those same children off on Sunday to be indoctrinated with myths for which no concrete evidence exists.
Okay so three parents say put Gender Queer in the library, two say no. Who wins out? Are we polling all the parents or just a select few? Never mind that most of these bans are coming from activists that don’t have children in the district either. So are the parents deciding?
And like I mentioned these books aren’t located in school libraries. The problem is those bans are hitting public libraries and affecting the books available there. Gender Queer is a YA/A book so if it’s in a school library then something’s gone wrong.
I don't believe in banning books, Amanda Gorman's book should be available to all. That being said, my local Wisconsin library has an adult section that has pornography that shouldn't be available to children.
No shocker there. The fully loaded white supremacy terrorist org (moms for liberty) are Trad wives gone madd! They are such miserable 1950 house slaves they’ll make any excuse to get away from their cruel husbands. Remember Phyllis Schlafly? She’s come back to haunt us!
🤣 Some parent(s)/care-giver(s)/conservators prefer to have certain books in age appropriate sections. If it's really all about "gender queer" & not j.o. porn, have you read anything by William S. Burroughs, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kérouac, Virginia Wolfe, Ursula K. Le Guin, Ginsberg, or Alice B. Toklas?
"I swear it's just about age appropriateness you guys!
It's just that Heather has two mommies, a book with a message so uncontroversial as 'other families look different and that's okay' is just too salacious and inappropriate for elementary school!"
Is that why we banned 1984, to kill a mockingbird, Harry Potter, lord of the rings, etc? Didn't realize how much porn was in them. I think the Bible has more explicit content than that.
My favorite example of a book being banned with no explicit content period was "Heather has two mommies" on the grounds that it was pornographic in nature by showing these two women in a relationship.
It's never about "age appropriate". They're just liars.
In all honesty, if a book entitled “Gender Queer” is “peer-reviewed?” It literally begs the question.
Answer? Anyone? Bueller?
Sometimes our blatant self parodies are way too ridiculous. We use the term “normalize” without ever actually applying it. I said what I said. Sue me - Time to get real.
Surprised to know that the USA also bans books for colour, race, blasphemy etc. Denying children the right to learn varied kinds of writings is like denying various kinds of vitamins. I thought such bans happened only in Asian Hindu or Islamic countries.
Well, bear in mind that what we call a "ban" doesn't mean you can't get a book. You can buy them all, including used copies at greatly reduced prices. And in some states what's not in the school library may still be in the public library and borrowable even with a children's card.
You should not be surprised. Read the Broken Earth trilogy and was delighted that 80% of the characters obviously had skin hues much darker than mine, and dreds. Only 15% of the entire world is white and I am sick to death of the black person getting killed off first. We must have equity.
I haven't using Libby and Overdrive since the pandemic. I wondered if that was being supportive enough of libraries. Now, I'm seeing captions under books I have on hold saying, "your library has ordered 12 more copies"...so I guess that's supporting the authors that I like!
I wouldn't call it porn, because I've seen far more explicit things in a medical textbook, but I'll agree that it should have a warning about some parts since it's a graphic novel. Still worth reading though.
Fucking disgusting, diversity in writing is the only thing that makes it half-interesting and expands it's readers viewpoint AS BOOKS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO?
Dawg diversity includes everyone, including white straight men, it's everyone's opinion in literature - even that of the dominant group - that makes reading so interesting, it's everyone's opinion and thoughts and the contrary. Removing a group shortens the sights of everyone.
Well, when you write books like “Gender Queer” that sell some kind of bullshit pseudoscience and moral relativism with half-truths, you’re going to get pushback. Truth, real Truth, exists in an objective state and will not tolerate this kind of corruption.
You’re absolutely right. Children need to read REAL science books about like how the entire earth was flooded except for a few people and two of every animal were kept on an ark and didn’t eat each other. TEACH THE REAL SCIENCE!
I’m actually kind of let down that I was so easily able to goad you into saying the exact shit I wanted you to say. Started off so adamant about “pseudoscience” but quick to mask your own hate & ignorance in your Bible beliefs. Keep talking; you’re doing great!
are we even surprised at this point? the blatant disrespect and racism the black community faces daily seems to be uninteresting to those in power who could help to stop it
Women authors of color who write nonfiction site their work more than any other demographic I've read. Buying non-fiction by a woman of color, I expect 20% to 30% to be bibliography.

Coincidence not equaling causality and all that.
More peer review is always a good thing. Unless you are a grifter of course. 🤷♂️
I know rule 34 exists but I never thought abstinence porn was a thing.
#duh 🤷♂️
We already knew book bans wasn’t about inappropriate material and was just about erasing people deemed “unwanted” in a certain political camp
If your 4 year old to read that, but it for him/her and read it at home
If I want my 4 year old to read that, I’ll but it for him/her and read it at home
I’ll teach mine my beliefs, you teach yours your beliefs and public schools need to stick to education
This is why you should have zero say in education cause you are the dumbest fucker in existence
If you think teaching homosexuality to a 4 year old is ok you’re likely a pedophile
Also, btw, that story is based on a real-life story. That's a story that happens in nature all the time. Learning about nature is a part of education.

Unfortunately, we can't do that now.
Jokes aside, that this is the current state of our global society breaks my heart.
I will never stop fighting for human rights, and the fact that these books make fascists feel uncomfortable just makes me happier.

Projection Lives!
Whatever a parent believes is irrelevant
It’s a parents right to determine what should and shouldn’t be available in a school library
I’m not judging the books, topics or even content
I’m simply saying that parents should have the right to determine what books are available in school libraries
Can a 51% majority of parents decide to ban all books other than the Bible? That would create the GOP Madrasas that they want, I guess.
Parents aren’t even aware of what materials are in a public school library and in some cases aren’t even fully aware of curriculum being taught
Personally I think school and public libraries are completely different and in my opinion, nothing should be banned from a public library

Gotta put that onto my fridge.
Being queer does not invalidate Christianity, and being Christian does not validate the gay lifestyle.
