I feel like even then you’re just deliberately choosing which dish to order at the restaurant. The actual work is being done by the cook/photographer/illustrator

Like maybe 1% of the time is spent prompting and 10% on selection. Most of the work is in Photoshop.

Also, as if photographers are out there going, "Okay, let's make those mountains pointier, I want more fir trees here, less clouds, let's add a rainbow there... okay, cue the flock of geese..."

Photographers don't create the scene; they conduct a guided search of the latent space, and then select from the outcomes generated by their tool.

But their latent space is vastly less diverse, and their tool with vastly fewer options, than an AI artist's.

Lastly, in regards to selection in specific: the US copyright office has *long* regarded the act of selection as a creative act, and the outcome of selection is a copyrightable result.

There is creativity in selection, granted. But prompting still selects from creative choices made by others, regurgitated by an algorithm. In my mind, all the labor of execution is stolen. Sorry if I come off harsh. It's an emotional topic for me

It does not select from creative choices "made by others"; it selects from options *created by the tool*. The same as reviewing and selecting photographs. A photographer isn't painting their photos either; the tool is making them. They're controlling the conditions in which their tool works.

I get that you have strong emotions on the topic, but you also seem to have misconceptions about how diffusion models work. They're not compositors. They don't just glue together pieces of works created by others. The training data very loosely defines the shape of the latent space....

I'm not anti-AI. Like Photoshop it's a tool that can be used well, even if the internet is overloaded with AI crap. I'm an artist and I sometimes use it. But your argument is not a good defense of AI, it's a play on something never said that also suggests Photoshop as lesser art.

Actually I don't think we're that far apart on this then.

I don't at all think of any tool (photoshop, photography, AI tools, painting, etc) as inherently superior, and I value the creativity of the author regardless of their medium.

But I do find it ironic to complain about photo fakery...

Karma hoarding accounts that just copy other people's content or run it through photoshop or img2img or filters to disguise it... we can all dislike them, regardless of their tools.

I find I get the best results introducing people to amazing AI artists like Roger Haus and Anna_Dart, if only to help people see this is not a simple topic. The idea of AI just copying goes out the window when presented with the best work.
