@nafnlaus.bsky.social We do have infinite amounts of (intermittent) offshore wind. Making it strong enough to withstand the heavy ice conditions is not cheap though.

@nafnlaus.bsky.social At least the sea is shallow (tens of meters) so the turbines don't need a tall foundation. There is easily 100 GW of offshore wind potential, more than enough. Autocorrelation is the problem.

We have the second lowest average electricity wholesale price in EU due to naturally developed wind power scheme (8 GW and counting-unsubsidized) last year. More than 60 GW of wind is planned. 3 GW of hydropower was build long time ago which is balancing the market. I wouldn't call that a curse.

It's not question of what you technically can do, but how much power you can get from a given installation.

I mean, Iceland *technically could* run itself on solar. It would just be a nonsensical choice because of how little resource we have, and would involve far more investment.

For example, we can get 5840 W/m² winds right outside our capitol with a mere 10-meter turbine.

The windiest place in Finland outside the far north is 553 W/m².... with a *100* meter turbine.

It's just not comparable.

We're only just starting building wind power because our geo and hydro are so cheap.

Let's put it another way: where are electricity-hungry industries like alumium smelters and datacentres choosing to be positioned - Finland or Iceland?

We will soon have 10 GW of wind and 3 GW of solar even though prices are already too low in the summer (bc of nuclear and solar). Everything after that is speculative and reliant on additional consumption but that is far from cursed location. Our national grid operator’s estimate:

I'm now regretting that I didn't save the video from my car on my drive home on Friday. ;) The gusts were like my car was randomly getting charged by bulls, and it was throwing large chunks of ice through the air. A ~15cm piece slammed into my windshield so hard I have no clue how it didn't break.
