If you're not worried about being close to the car, you can usually look on the screen in the console and it'll show if it's activated.

Also, you need a storage device hooked up to the car to store the video, I'm guessing most people don't bother.

I’ve never seen one in person - but I did once put a mackerel under the hood/windshield gap on a Cadillac, on the air intake … that driver having done me dirty.

The amount of battery life it takes to power a digital camera is absolutely negligible compared to how much it takes to move a few tons of metal down the road. You'd probably have to let it sit idle for a few weeks for the camera to have any noticeable impact.

Depends. Is it just the camera, or does it engage the Tesla's native identification system as well? I've only been in one to date (a taxi I rode in turned out to be one) and I noticed it's constantly trying to figure out if obstructions in the vicinity are cars, trucks, trees, bicycles, or people.

If that subroutine continues to operate when it's in park and turned off, that'll eat up battery life more quickly.

Incidentally, the Tesla sucks at figuring out if something nearby is a car, truck, bicycle, or tree. It's slightly better with people, but even those occasionally flicker.
