You can actually pick up most of the novels in standalone, though some do go together.
The first two books (the colour of magic and Light fantastic) work quite well as a first foray into the discworld, but Guards guards! or Mort would also be a great start. :)
wouldnt recommend the first two tbh, they are kinda satirizing things which dont really exist anymore, and really isnt the best work. go with mort instead! or Guards Guards, or Pyramids!
Start with Equal Rites, Mort, or Guards Guards! They're all fantastic books. But if you just want a single one, read Small Gods. Probably the funniest book ever written.
And then just follow this general reading order. Or do them in the order they were written.
Start anywhere- it really doesn't matter- most of them will reel you in and you'll end up reading them all anyway. Just finished "Thief of Time" for probably the 5th or 6th time. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love the story and as always happens, I find something new to appreciate every time.
God the Discworld books are so great, I should read them again - especially given the 10 year anniversary of the author's death coming up. GNU Terry Pratchett.
