Here’s a look at my mixed media process! I start with a tight reversed drawing underneath a plexiglass plate. Then I’ll paint and print several monoprint layers in acrylics. Most monoprint I see is done with oil-based inks, but I prefer acrylics because of how unpredictable they are. It leaves me with more randomness to keep the unfinished areas spontaneous. I like how even though I follow the drawing, I can’t fully control it therefore leaving room to improvise!

Thank you! It’s sort of a combination of the two. I took a class once that had a monoprint workshop, but I didn’t implement it into illustration till much later. It took a couple years of experimenting to make it practical for commission work because it could be so unpredictable!

It depends! Something like this was not very compicated, so maybe only about 10 layers total. But something like the Vile Luxury cover was probably close to 50. Sounds like a lot but you have to do them super fast so the paint doesn’t dry, so even the heftier prints never take more than a day.

Definitely. That’s why I almost always list the medium as mixed media & digital, because the digital portion enhances the artwork enough to list it as a used material. Nowadays I do all my merch designs digitally though, this piece was a rare exception. Mixed media is reserved for covers and such! 🔥
