In countries which are run by coalitions it doesn't matter if you come in second. Other parties have to agree to work with you or you achieve nothing. No other party will work with the AfD so it doesn't matter how many votes they got, they have no power. There are 6 parties in Germany.

Countries that were not former British territories operate a different parliamentary system. The Netherlands and Germany for instance have many parties and each of those parties gets a percentage of the vote, to form a government they must get other parties to agree to govern with them.

That means that every single government (cabinet etc) is formed by multiple parties combining together to reach a certain number which represents the majority of the vote. This means that even though AfD came in second, if no other party is willing to work with them, a vote for AfD is pointless.

Germany has to form coalitions to operate, if none of the other parties is willing to work with the AfD they have zero power. There are 6 parties in Germany. It's unlikely that the AfD will continue to hold any power if no other party is willing to work with it.

In countries that rely on coalitions the only way to power is if other parties are willing to work with you, if no party will work with you, then you are either always the opposition OR you disappear. No one wants to vote for a party that cannot do anything, they don't want to waste their vote.

When the CDU made the mistake of agreeing with the AfD they saw a dramatic drop in their polling numbers. Other parties started to poll better. There were also dramatic protests in the streets. Any party stupid enough to work with the AfD will lose the next election.
