When the influencer / content creator bubble bursts, there’s going to be a flood of unskilled laborers entering the workforce. Being good at TikTok dances isn’t a sustainable career & the pivot to Crypto investment won’t help either.
As someone who personally knows a content creator, the reason so many chase it is because you're being paid to have fun, and those full time content creators are making enough money not to work, so it's a viable career.
My content creator bud makes more money than I do as a teacher.
I have a family member who has a long time boyfriend who quit his job. Eventually we found out he was literally making money streaming games on twitch.
It seems kind of surreal that people are actually doing this.
It is surreal! I'm happy for your family member's partner but, you know, I demand to know what the definition of "full time job" is for this study... I guess you could call what I do a "full time job" but it's not paying the bills.
Why do you think so? For young people especially, I think it’s both a viable business and a form of entertainment that they themselves prefer to consume.
The market share of attention is finite and splintered. Not to make it into a zero-sum game, but there is only so much "content creation" that can produce revenue, and the wide bulk of those revenues don't go to the creators in the first place.
Agree that it sucks but college costs more money than many people will make on their whole lives and customer service and similar jobs are a horrific and dehumanizing experience. I can't blame anyone at all for doing this especially in the US.

The kids ARE NOT alright.

The kids idolizing chronically online narcissists, podcasters, influencers, and saying “I can do that!” are going to be the biggest losers here.
Stay in school kids 🤷♂️

According to the study quoted in the LinkedIn post, the 1.5M number is “full-time equivalent” workers earning $66k/year:

So someone earning $1k/year is counted as less than one FTE worker.
So no, not sustainable in any sense.
Can’t get rid of the buggers.
Block block blockety block.
