I'm a pretty big anti-charge person. I just think the game would be better if plays like this were eliminated. Don't award defenders for purposively trying to get in the way of the offensive player

I'd like to see it go the other way and get rid of the gather. It basically becomes indefensible with a euro to take three full steps and you have to either become a matador or get called for a blocking foul.

No, they aren't paid off. It's just a really tough call to make especially with how the rule is written so it leads to inconsistent outcomes.

I mean, I'll defer to anyone who has a good understanding the rule book like that, but if that's a charge I really think the rule needs to be looked at. Just don't think defenders should be rewarded by getting in the way especially when they are still moving laterally like that

With legal guarding position, the NBA rule book uses the phrase "beat him to the spot" which I would argue Prince doesn't do when he shifts to the left.

I would argue TSJ does try to avoid it with is euro-step but Prince goes from shuffling back to stopped after he gathers the ball

The refs and your friend clearly saw it differently though so they must be calling it according to the rule book. That's why though I think the rule needs to be changed or tweaked. Just don't think that play getting called a charge is good for basketball

There are also some refs who will look for any reason not to change their initial call, no matter how wrong they are.
This particular call was called by Marat Kogut who was the Referee. The Crew Chief was Mitchell Ervin and the Umpire CJ Washington.

The Bucks are 6-1 when any on them are reffing.
The Wolves are 5-6.
Then add in the foul differential between the first three quarters and the 4th.
Bucks were called for 14 in the first 3 quarters & 1 in the fourth.
The Wolves were called for 7 in the first 3 quarters and 6 in the fourth.

The optics look bad. Especially when they would call something on the Wolves but ignore the same call on the Bucks. Just look at Rudy’s postgame comments for verification on that.

Also, the later in the game it gets the less likely the refs will overturn a foul call.
