The custom of the sea as it was known was common practice in this time and as long as lots were drawn and the lottery fair with each man’s life or survival at risk, then professional it was viewed that they had done their jobs and had nothing to be ashamed of and could continue their sailing .#hatm

It's not in the published story.

The extra horrors of the crew aren't explored as in the movie; the story is pretty much ended when the Pequod sinks and Ahab joins the whale.
