I’ve always thought the ‘TikTok is bad’ stuff was overblown, EXCEPT, China had a tool and chose not to use it.

Let’s not allow this experience to give us a false sense of security. TikTok could have pushed an alternate reality to their user base had they wanted to.

I'm still confused as to how it could actually be banned? Like what would be the actual technical mechanism. Delisting from an app store isn't a ban. Apps are just repackaged chromium browsers. Android users can just sideload it and everyone else can just go to the website on their phones.

In my experience, a lot of the liberal and lefty content on TikTok (as well as much of the LGBTQ influencers) seem designed to enrage or disengage people from coalition building. There are lots of good people there but I wouldn’t measure the quantity over quality.

I had the same thought, but in aggregate maybe it is a little better than the other apps? TikTok's algorithm is probably just quicker and better at only showing things we like, so if we don't like "right" videos we don't see them again, but they're still out there.

It's biased by the users. Old folks used Facebook while gen z uses TikTok. It's impossible to see the actual bias in the algorithm from this simplistic data. This reporting is concerning in many ways. People in the west are so uneducated about what's going on in the East.
