Well yes but I am an author of a gay indie sci-fi series that hasn't had decades to build up. So I have freedom the Elder Scrolls doesn't. I am greater than their deepest lore, for I have FREEDOM.

Indeed. It is also pretty revealing.
Sci-Fi (and even moreso Fantasy) are vulnerable to have their status quo explained away without much effort. (aka Technology/Magic).
You can tell pretty easily who took major shortcuts, making the world less appealing.
