I will wholeheartedly support this change if anyone can provide me with both 1) a cyclist who was sentenced to the maximum allowed (2years) under the current law 2) a single driver sentenced to life for death by dangerous driving. 14,000 deaths in 10 years. Maybe Matt Briggs can explain why this driver didn't go to jail? And whilst he's at it, maybe explain why Charlie Alliston didn't receive the maximum sentence at the time either?

Serious question, what about pedestrians who kill cyclists? The number must be non-zero. A pedestrian stepping into a road without looking and hitting a cyclist, is as likely to kill or injure the cyclist as themselves. So where it the equivalent law?
Even if it saves one life...

Whole-heartedly agree. Had Charlie Alliston had a front brake then he'd have been found not at fault and the blame would lie with the person who stepped into his path without looking.

The last time a pedestrian clearly killed a cyclist they were let off.

I remember this case. Unlike Charlie, who did try to avoid the victim, this woman apparently pushed the elderly woman cyclist into the road.

Almost. She blocked the path and waved her arms and shouted at the old lady which caused her to fall into the road but yeah. 100% killed that lady and got away with it

This via @marksutton.bsky.social. In 2022 in the EU, pedestrian collisions killed 10 cyclists, while cyclist collisions killed 25 pedestrians.

Cars killed 2409 pedestrians & 921 people on bikes. Combined, cars kill ~100x more pedestrians & cyclists than they do eachother.
