Gonna be a 31 year old free agent catcher who has been ridden hard, has "old player skillset", and half of defensive value comes from thing that might be eliminated by rule/technology changes.
Age. He's gonna be an old first time free agent and unless the team can get ages 31-33 for a reasonable price without paying out the ass for 34+, he's probably not gonna play on a second contract here.
Two reasons: 1. Scott Boras wants his clients to hit free agency and 2. Mariner ownership is cheap and won’t make a deal he can’t refuse. We have a captain and future manager in hand. Other franchises would find a way.

Also Scott Boras.
