I’m old as dirt, remember mother going to dept store, pulled out mil ID when paying w/credit card. Man says, oh ma’am we don’t need ID from military. Early 50s. Boy things have changed!

Now Dems are saying ok, if you want ID, gov should pay for passport. Problem there are costs to get req docs, eg birth cert. There are folks who couldn’t afford a birth cert, & esp now since they are cutting food, fuel, & Medicaid assist to the poor. Lots of poor have no DL or minimum ID.

Yeah, an ID in Sweden, for example, costs around $40, and a copy of the birth certificate is free (if you live in Sweden and have a digital ID, so you can log in on the service).

So it definitely doesn't need to be expensive.

Getting a certified copy of the original birth certificate from the birth state can be expensive in time and/or money. And if you’ve been flagged as target of identity theft before or because of getting birth certificate copy, then ….

Interesting article in Wikipedia under Voter identification laws in the United States. US doesn’t have a nat’l ID like other countries. States have set IDs from birth cert to DL, to utility bills! As for Dems & IDs, I assume that dates to poll taxes, when poor (& POC) didn’t have the money to pay.

Yeah, the new REAL IDs in the states seem to cost $100, which is quite expensive, and since you need to pay to get a birth certificate it's even worse.

But just requiring any ID to vote doesn't seem bad, most people have some form of ID, and how else can you even live or have a bank account, etc?

There has been an effort to get IDs to people via civil rights orgs but I’ve been gone so long I don’t know updated info. It’s a goatrope either way.

If our government provided no or low cost ID to every citizen, and then accepted that ID as valid for everything including voting, no one would be complaining. But that isn’t how it is. So much of how the US does things is really backward and primitive compared to other countries.

To get IDs costs time and money. Given how states have cut back on services/service hours/staffing and raised “user fees”, it’s actually gotten more expensive and less convenient to get photo ID in the past 25 years than it used to be — that’s even as we have become a “show me your ID” country.
