The split reaction on Nightreign seems inevitable. People love the gameplay of the Souls games, but they also love the carefully obtuse world building that contributes to the dark aesthetic. Nightreign looks to be 100% gameplay focused, so of course people are assuming the tone will be scattershot.

Nightreign in particular confuses me, bc it's essentially an dev-internal mod anyway! It's a quick, barely-sanctioned asset flip with a professional coat of polish, not a big expensive new game. Even if you're not into it, you lose nothing by its existence. It took no resources from the next game.

the fundamental thing I want from games i play is for them to be made to be fun.

I have trust in fromsoft to make a good and fun game, and whatever they experiment with will be built on in future for more things.

It may not be something i ultimately vibe with, but not everything is.
