Doom: The Dark Ages begins with a 5 minute cutscene that includes three labeled locations, nine speaking roles including four named characters, and a macguffin
Doom (2016) begins with someone trying to exposit to the Doom Slayer via monitor and he literally throws the monitor away

but i distinctly recall that monitor moment being pretty widely interpreted as "yeah yeah, story, let's get to the shooting" and in retrospect it might end up being one of the most widely misunderstood moments in modern gaming
and each game since has seemed to shove THAT mentality into its own locker
increasingly, i think the authorial intent behind that scene was "I'm not listening to THIS GUY talk about his noble intentions harvesting demon energy" and not "i don't care about story, let me shoot more stuff"

but the interpretation of that first moment was really, *really* sticky
I mean, I get why. It can be fun to read between the lines.
Contrarily, far easier to center the work around Player-as-Protagonist, “I am the main character.” No empathizing with other perspectives required!
Sure those codex entries are extent, but they're nowhere near as obsequious and fawning as Eternal's plot, codices, and lore became.
