The IWM description is, sadly, both inaccurate and incomplete. It states that it shows the tail of another aircraft. The distinct rudder shape is that of a Blenheim. The code letters XJ indicate No 13 OTU (not 293 Sqn, which also used XJ) Calling a Dominie a Dragon Rapide is just sloppy!

Good programme about him on TV yesterday. What an eye that man had, how fast he worked and such a unique, recognisable style. And after putting himself in harm's way on ships, planes and subs, to die on a relatively routine mission. The only WW2 war artist to die on active duty

I saw a talk and a presentation of the film at the Wiltshire Museum a couple of years ago, he'd painted some of the White Horses around here. His war art though is wonderful.

I believe they mentioned that nobody bothered to write it down so one of the only records of them pitching little tents to keep the engines warm was his paintings.
