I remember when these illustrations were done in an old hotel on Main & Broad in Lake Geneva WI. One floor was the art dept.

My initial prompt was to feature the jackalwere in humanoid and feral form, ready to ambush desert travelers. The reference provided featured a rougher looking creature with wild hair and tattered clothes. I was asked to change it to a more "civilized" looking design and to add a feminine variant.

I find it fascinating how little alterations had to be made between the sketch and the final piece. Nailed it from the very start! Looks like it's digital and had to be transferred over to a traditional canvas, too?

I read its stat block, and because I am so tired, I read small fiend as "small friend" and didnt even question it until I was completely through with reading.
But it all makes a lot more sense now, you did draw them very fiendish looking. Very nice!
