Except he's making that point ineptly because the crime that the train guy was actually fined heavily for wasn't incurring a £3.90 loss, it was preventing the course of justice and failing to attend court.

I’m not sure where you got “preventing the course of justice” from. Even if the fine is only the £100, it’s still weird to me that’s only half the fine of hitting another car and then leaving the scene 1/2
I’m not making any excuses for anyone, I am just very surprised that the consequences of hitting another car and then leaving the scene, and then drinking wine aren’t order-of-magnitude higher than failing to pay for a train ticket 🤷
It seems odd to me as well that leaving the scene and then drinking alcohol wasn’t a more serious aggravating factor, as this would undermine any evidence for driving under the influence. Ignoring letters or failing to attend hearings feel much less serious by comparison
In all the Railcard stories I did none of them knew they'd been taken to court. Does seem like these SJP cases don't seem to make much attempt to actually get in touch with the person if they don't respond to correspondence?

Not quite sure why we're making excuses for adults who fail to be responsible and accountable for their actions.
