I think we all agree that it is unreasonable that these justices stay in their roles so long. Too many problems arise from it.

So then the best option is for term limits.
The alternative solution of limiting how long you live after you take the role seems a bit rough.

Lifetime appointments to anything is outrageous. We need 13 justices serving these 18 year terms (I'd rather they be 15 years). Thirteen justices would be less likely to be dominated by one party and would correspond to the number of federal districts.

At the time the constitution was written, average life expectancy was less than 40, so a lifetime appointment would on average be far shorter than they are today. Totally makes sense to me to reset the bar and cap them at 18 years!
