Oh, cool! That's awesome. Yeah, an amazing story, huh. Must have been incredibly disorienting to the people, especially with the river being such a daily part of some of their lives. I'll read this, thanks!
Wonderful essay. Great writing, as always. You always capture it so well. I especially liked this.
"The 8.2 magnitude quake transformed the topography of the sparsely populated, newly purchased Louisiana Territory. It was so violent that it caused the Mississippi River to run backwards.
It was so massive it made church bells ring on the eastern shore. It terrified southern Missouri’s few residents, a smattering of settlers and indigenous tribes, who saw in it a dark omen of the American future.
metaphor for what we're going through. A lot of pundits mention "gravity." Like, "Does gravity still exist in Washington?"
That's a good one, and expressive. But this here is even better. Perfectly encapsulates the completely unmoored feeling we all have. Like the laws of nature have
"My predictions were obvious, the monikers ridiculous. I accept only one nickname: Cosa Nostradamus, because all I see coming is transnational organized crime.
Track the profit, not the prophet. America’s fortune’s been told and it’s sitting in offshore accounts."
Vichy dems….. spot on description. We need stronger democratic leadership. I miss the days of Ted Kennedy on the senate floor eviscerating the republican senate. He was a force that still has not been replaced in our senate. I would pay to see him take down trump in 2016 & 2025.
Beautiful writing; and thank you for the reminder of the confluence. I grew up in MO and I sometimes miss the presence of those powerful rivers and marking seasons by their changes.
