It's very much an emergent thing imo. While the setting isn't interesting on paper, the internal logic of the world leads to juicy juxtapositions that would not work in anything set in our world. All of the characters have way more depth than it seems at first too.

I see one appealing character who is usually make masked, and it seems to mostly be about fighting and yelling.

While there is a lot of fighting, it's not at the core of the story. The violence is an integral part of the world, but it's there to contrast the more humane elements of the story and the characters. I went it with low expectations and was positively surprised how much more there is to it.

idk man I almost never watch anime without a giant robot in it, its what brought me to the genre -- that and psychological thrillers and obviously the usual perversions.
