Was honestly more surprised to find out Dragon Ball Z was a sequel series. Think I found out towards the end of the 1995 run of Vegeta Saga

Flea markets all had bootlegs of the movies and posters from Japan so when I moved to FL SS was instantly spoiled. Internet curiosity spoiled everything else.

Everyone knows the term "Super Saiyan," but does everyone know what a Saiyan is? Like, somebody could possibly be watching, knowing that Goku has something called "Super Saiyan," but not know he's an alien specifically

It’s like Darth Vader being Luke’s father. When it was first revealed it was shocking, but it eventually became so iconic and referenced that you don’t even need to see a second of any of the movies to know it.

I think it's difficult to get a genuine reaction out of Dragon Balls big plot twists from people when they probably already knew it was coming, I'd love to see someone actually being blindsided by such an out of nowhere and huge change in the narrative and wondering what Toriyama was thinking lol

Super Saiyan is 100% impossible to avoid. But I'm willing to bet your average person might not realize "Saiyan" is an alien race, and just think it's a word connected to the golden hair power up

I knew someone who misheard Saiyan as "saying" when being introduced to the dubbed anime. Consequently, they thought a Super Saying was just saying the name of the fighting technique even harder.

For what it's worth, I did not correct them. I can only hope they're still out there being adorable.

Like, imagine getting that far into a series and then “Oh, by the way the MC is an alien, and can transform, and this is what the rest of the series is gonna be” that’s wild.
