I’ve found it hard to find anything but glowing reviews of Chalamet’s performance. I didn’t care for it, honestly. It’s almost an impossible task. You either do an imitative performance or you create a kind of parallel character. He went for the former. His musical performances were impressive /1
but worse enough than the real thing that it’s hard to believe that everyone’s going nuts over his talent. His voice is worse and the beat in his performance drags a bit. And then there’s his speaking voice, which seems kind of over the top weak, whiny, and nasally, and seems to get more so /2
as the movie goes. Is that really how he talked? Don’t think so. Finally and this is more of a screenplay critique, Dylan comes off as an unlikable character - crappy to his girlfriends, his management, audience, etc. Maybe that’s the real early 60’s Bob but it’s a little hard to root for him. /3
