Literary translator friends: Which US organization would you recommend I join, which has a good legal department (something like the UK Society of Authors) that can bat for you? I understand ALTA don't offer this kind of service.

If you join the National Writers Union, you can receive contract advice from fellow members -- not paid staff and not lawyers, so it comes with a disclaimer that it is not legal advice.
