Pirola was strange from the beginning. Didn't it spread to like 50 countries while there were only a few sequences in each location? I always thought that meant airport spread was needed to spread it widely initially bc it had evolved in a chronic infection.🤔

BA 2.86 was everywhere. But, not sufficiently well armed to get a hold.

It was a single point mutation ->JN1 which swept all before it.

i just remember early days of only one or two Pirola sequences popping up in many countries seemed so weird to me and here we are.😮‍💨

It definitely seems that covid waves have become closer together since it came on the scene. By causing longer infections and more reinfections, maybe it confers an evolutionary advantage to variants descended from Pirola?

I wish we had more accurate long covid counts to see how that's changed.

This was what I had predicted in Oct 2023... This was Pi.

The vast immune-evasiveness of JN1 and it's kids is totally next level. KP 2&3 then XEC and so forth. Little protection from prior infection. This is the "Happy Place" for this virus.

And it's nowhere near done.

Since there doesn't seem to be a natural endpoint, unchecked spread would possibly select for constant high levels of infection?

That's my fear, especially if long covid keeps lowering the amount of population immunity that can be attained through infection. :/
