Lovely stuff. Challenge used to show the reruns early in the morning when I was a teen, so I’d watch an episode over breakfast before school.

You’ve correctly identified that in the early series the questions weren’t that dumbed down. Often I too would have been left with only BFH!

This piece was going very well for a while. But what do you dislike about people being able to earn a living from something there’s obviously a market for?
Never noticed the dumbing-down of questions in later series, but will keep an eye out for that on Challenge.

Great read, but you left out one of the most bizarre aspects of the programme: the dart board wheeled out for the pro to play on at the climax of the show was not only the wrong height, it was also the wrong distance away, so muscle memory went out the window. That’s why the pro was always terrible.

Really? Didn’t know that. I was always concerned that if I’d appeared I might smash the lights on the surround with a stray dart. I struggle to believe no one ever threw off the board, particularly in the final with the non-dart player having three throws.

Enjoyed this. It was a Sunday afternoon staple for us. On the (initially) small prizes, Bowen used to distribute the winnings (usually less than £100) and say to camera, "It'll take me the length of the ad break to count it out". Which led to Peter Kay's line: "What's it in, Jim? 2p's?"
