Hello. Got a new laptop and thinking about trying to make some terrible music. What do people recommend in terms of subscription-based music software? Was thinking I might try Logic. You could always try Reaper to begin! It’s free to evaluate indefinitely. But it doesn’t really come with much stock plugins and vst instruments, so you’ll have to do some searching to get some free ones.

Unfortunately I am wedded to Logic, for good or for ill. I don’t know if I can recommend it, but I also refuse to use anything else.

So I was initially thinking of just dropping £200 on Logic and being done with it, but figured it was probably worth testing the waters beforehand.

I think just taking a run at any of the trials that take your fancy will always help what works for your workflow.

I've been running Reaper for a bit now, and it is a little abrasive/clinical at first with yourself having to do the leg room on VSTs etc, especially when you may want to 'just go'.

One thing that has really helped in getting comfortable with it has been switching out the default skin/theme for a community one, of which there's a bunch online. There's a few that attempt to replicate how other DAWs look such as Logic, Cubase, ProTools etc.
