Just watched (the movie) Saturday Night. It’s only okay, but it was still fun to watch & a few performances NAIL it, especially Matt Wood as Belushi & Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase. I could also watch a whole other movie about Rachel Sennott’s Rosie Schuster - ThreadSky

The (completely made up) scene with Johnny Carson smack talking Lorne 15 minutes before the show was funnier than anything “funny” the movie tried to portray. “Keep Saturday night warm for my reruns, CHUMP.”

I think a streaming series would work better. Trying to squeeze so much into 90 minutes or so didn’t really work. Some good performances but overall it was a disappointment for me.

I was struck by the range of how people were portrayed. Agree that they nailed the look, delivery, etc for Chase. Thought the actor imbued the spirit of Ackroyd even if he didn’t look exactly the same. To me, Wood felt like a parody of Belushi; acting like someone doing an impression of him.

Thinking about it also made me think about how that original cast did impressions vs today’s. Now they have wigs and makeup and try to get it 100%. Before they would aim for the vibe but if Ackroyd didn’t say he was Jimmy Carter, would we really know? (Still hilarious, but …)

For whatever the movie’s strengths and weaknesses were, I felt like almost everyone in the cast nailed it. Even those with only a few moments felt pretty perfect.
