This is a lift from Neal Stephenson's 1992 sci-fi novel "Snow Crash". In it, the world has been carved up into "Franchise-Organized Quasi-National Entities (FOQNEs), each run by its own big business franchise (such as "Mr. Lee's Greater Hong Kong". Gated communities become sovereign "Burbclaves".
