It's not just fdr. One of the things the epa did not long after it was formed was document the nation's pollution via photography. That can seem frivolous, but generations of Americans have no idea why the EPA was necessary. This broke a million views when we published it in 2017

2/2 dumb teenage insults, threw ice cubes, ad nauseum. (Drummer at one point threw his sticks at crowd; someone caught them & threw them back.) If we’d known the dude was in Gwar we might’ve been better, I dunno, but it must’ve been a huge bummer for them, esp bc everybody then went ape for Helmet

Cuyahoga River caught on fire (and the Chicago River multiple times before that). This level of water pollution was normal. If the billionaires have their way, there’ll be no EPA and they can make the rest of us sick and there’ll be no HHS to investigate anything so we’ll just die. For profits.

It was a pragmatic move: multiple states were enacting conflicting laws and big business wanted just one set of rules that was consistent across states. It was to streamline things for them and they actively advocated for it.
