just read the thread, see the assumption is ppl participate in competitive scenes only for monetary incentive(which can be part of it ofc) but I disagree thats thats the *primary* motivation - people are driven just as much by a vain sense of pride and accomplishment as money in some cases

I think one of the biggest advantages Splatoon as a esports has right now is that it HASN'T been tainted by the same forces that act on other scenes and inevitably shape it through sheer monetary force driving any hobbyists that can't compare out

You can genuinely want to improve simply to improve and when you look at your peak you look back at the journey you took to get here in satisfaction instead of dismay

Most of the big org heads and TOs right now are ppl that hit their peak then immediately turned around and kept helping in the scene

Which is something that I think needs to be drilled into peoples head, you do not need to be even remotely close to the best player in the world to have a positive impact on the scene and you can take satisfaction in other things besides the endless grind to stay #1

Yes nintendo has the deck stacked against us(for good reason tbqh, just look at Smash's scene, its a miracle they give us a long leash by comparison) Yes theres no content updates atm but when you actually think about it "I'm only interested in playing a game competitively until it stops being-

updated" is a pretty shallow reason to quit a game unless you already didn't particularly like it.

Ppl will spent days weeks months or even years speedrunning old games like Mario 64, and the barrier of entry to be "competitive" in a scene like that is similar even if its a different genre
