#365Games Day 50: Contra (NES). Not the best game of the '80s but maybe the most '80s of all video games, with its Schwarzenegger-blockbuster action & its unforgettable Giger/guts-stage finale. Made the Konami code household knowledge, though I played it so much I could beat it on 1 standard credit.

Some retro friends, Gamers Week Podcast High Score Tournament, had a casual Contra speedrun (Konami code allowed) last week. It was good fun. There were first-time players, doubles runs, pros, middle-of-the-road players. I bet you would've loved it. I'll try to remember to tell you for the next one.

#365Games Day 51: Okay, let's do a big one tonight. Batman on NES is an all-time favorite of mine. Sunsoft's art direction makes the absolute most of the NES color palette to create moody, atmospheric environments, the soundtrack is a total scorcher, and the movement is supremely satisfying.

I remember the wall jump was just so good. So hard though, like many NES games. I eventually enjoyed it a lot more on an emulator, where I could use save states.

#365Games Day 54: Space Quest IV. There's nothing novel about this kind of meta-narrative and humor today but it sure seemed clever when I encountered it here. The game saw you, as series hero Roger Wilco, hop forward to Space Quests X and XII and back to the original in a time-ripping adventure.

Hehe I reviewed the Mega CD Batman Returns for Kotaku Aus.

Probably the dumbest feature I ever got away with doing for them & maybe my favorite.

I never played the prior game though! I do own Batman Forever on Mega Drive also however which is terrible. 😅

Yes!! The unlikely progenitor of the RTS genre! Westwood devs got their Dune 2 inspiration from playing local matches of this.

Works great with RetroArch's netplay :D
