A troubled Little Monk came to the Old Monk. “Master, why does evil exist?”
The Old Monk said nothing. He led the disciple outside, where the evening sun cast long shadows. Pointing to a stone, he asked, “What do you see?”
“A stone,” Little Monk said.

“A shadow.”
The Old Monk nodded. He picked up the stone and moved it. The shadow shifted. He set it down. The shadow settled.
The Little Monk reached out. His hand passed through empty air.
Old Monk smiled. “Do not fear what is not there.” Then he walked away.
