When son #2 was a winter baby and he had an older brother that went to daycare. What this means is that when he was 2 months old he ended up with a pretty severe case of RSV

Infants in almost any kind of distress get to go to the front of the line, because hours matter in ones this little. She went to a backroom and then very quickly was admitted with him. I stayed home to watch after big brother and god bless unlimited texting.

Congestion of any kind in infants is a really big deal because they don't know how to breath through their mouths effectively and his O-2 levels were something like upper 70's or low 80's when he got there. He was pretty actively dying

6 years later it's a bit of a blur, but to cut through all the details we had 3 days of being worried (the doctor's were worried) and then at least 4 more days of being stuck at the hospital with him hooked up to high flow O-2 while his lungs cleared out

Ultimately he comes home happy and healthy. We are very relieved and then about 3 weeks later CHOA sends us a bill for roughly $7500 for all of the things that UHC (hi Luigi!) won't be covering due to it being "medically unnecessary"

My wife regularly fights coding. Because she knows the rules, and she sees the bill and calls the provider and says "this doesn't meet the standards of a level 2 visit, because..." And the bill gets cut in half.

And it's so easy to think "the physicians was trying to overcharge!" But usually that's not it. Usually the physician has some office worker who is coding the visits based on quickly written notes from the physician and some best guesses or standard rules. And people err on the side of more money.

Yeah, especially in a case like ours where it's an ER visit and then admittance to the PICU. I doubt any doctor there is thinking about "ooo let's make my employer an extra 3% margin on this one."

Yeah, they are just shoving numbers into a computer and hoping, on average, they cover the PICU's monthly costs.

My policy is pretty much, I'm going to hit my deductible at some point this year, I don't really care how or when.

Not nearly as serious as your situation but our oldest battled croup early enough in his life that it could've been real bad if not addressed. Take him to one local children's hospital that closes down at 8 pm but has another location 30 minutes away. They tell us we can drive him or they can take

him via their ambulance to keep him on oxygen. Two terrified parents couldn't fucking jump faster on the offer of an ambulance. Rest of the night is thankfully uneventful and we go home early in the morning. Weeks later we discover how expensive taking a (private) ambulance really can be.
