I think remakes should but i draw the line with remasters and fucking dlc. i loved the elden ring dlc to death. ( besides the crappy final fight before the nerfs.) But it should win dlc of the year. the same that cyberpunk won its dlc from last year. so many games came out this year that can be goty
I watched the game awards for Sonic announcements and Smash bros announcements. Both of those aren't gonna be there so I'm just not watching this year tbh. Like the awards are "cool" but they don't really matter to me that much. Plus I'm not putting on my clown make up thinking KH will be there.
Remastered and remake's yeah but DLC I disagree with.
Some dlc are practically other games added to the original or are huge but not big enough to be a fully fleged to be games but if they've cooked i do think they should be eligible for goty.
I'm totally fine for Remakes depending on how deep the Remake is compared to the original. However, remasters and DLC are a no-no for me, especially since this is the first major time it is happening
DLC and remasters I agree with. Unless the DLC is stand alone, and doesn’t need the OG game, like with Uncharted Lost Legacy. Remakes however, depends on how different it is from the original.
I agree with your other points, but I feel like remakes should be taken case by case. Like for example, TLOU part 1 vs FF7 rebirth. Both are called remakes, but one is a carbon copy of the og with some new graphics. While the other is basically a sequel to the og and has tons of new content
Silent Hill 2 should absolutely win an award somewhere. Bloober deserves recognition with how fantastic that remake is. Especially after all the incels shit on it because of a singular screenshot
I’m totally fine with it winning something, it just feels a bit weird to have a mostly unchanged story from 2001 counted as best story.
It’s the one thing you can’t really credit to bloober, so I’d rather it win something else to better recognize their work and talent
That's fair enough but I'd have to disagree when you say it's unchanged. There's been added scenes tweaked and added dialogue. Yes the main story is largely unchanged but I feel like the plot and story are largely more fleshed out in the remake.
I’m sure the added scenes do give more context, but I don’t really think that altering some scenes and dialogue should really be considered on the same level as a completely new story.
That’s more what I mean. I think we should focus on the changes that makes the remake a good new experience
I agree that games should be celebrated similarly but I believe that a remake/remaster category would be a good way to do so without taking the spotlight from games that came out for the first time that are eligible for goty
Hmm yeah I really like the idea of a remaster category - that's a very specific development style that should be celebrated when executed at a high level.
I still think the level of effort delta between a remaster and remake is way too large to couple them as the same category
Yep agreed. Ik a lot of people wonder why some get frustrated about what does and doesn’t get nominated for the Game Awards but like you said, celebration is a big part of it
People want to see their favorite games and devs get celebrated and get awarded for their efforts
For me personally; I just find it hard to divorce the game from the dlc itself. Like I love Elden Ring so I'm always going to have the base game in the back of my head as adding into it. Like is Smash Ultimate fighting game of the year with every new character?
Remake is such a wide gulf from a remaster that I'm fine with those being up for Game of the Year. Agree with you on Remasters, expansions, or DLC. If it's just the original with new graphics or you need the old game to play it. That's not a new game.
Agree mostly, but I think that remakes should have a shot. Many times, the game is reinvented and is functionally different from the original. Especially in cases like RE2 Remake and Silent Hill 2 Remake.
If you want to bann this DLC, you are gonna have to bann shit like Cod, or EA Sports games, that are dubble the cost and don't even offer half the amount of content.
If we want a honest discussion, we should want them to add new categories for new developments in the gaming industrie.

Maybe have each their own category?
Best remake/remaster of the year
And
Best On-going game of the year

They add a new story or clarity more on the existing story, add new enemies and bosses and locals/map.

The delta between a remaster and remake is pretty large in most cases.
A dev team on a remake is likely putting in a similar amount of work to an entirely new game's team. So I think they should be celebrated similarly.
FF7 Rebirth for example is a gray area since it has a ton of new content and ideas but it derives heavily from the original release in 1997
I still think the level of effort delta between a remaster and remake is way too large to couple them as the same category
if its strictly the players and their experience - totally agree with what you're saying
if its to celebrate the dev teams, FF7 Rebirth should 100% be considered because the effort that project took is on par with a new AAA game
People want to see their favorite games and devs get celebrated and get awarded for their efforts
Once again this is just a me issue.
Even with it's changes, I think Resi 4 is still too close to the original to count.
But FF7R is effectively an entirely new game with the FF7 framework.
DLC could be its own category but definitely not count toward being GOTY. If it's not a full game, it can't win an award for one.
Remakes/remasters shouldn't be in at all. It shouldn't be possible for one title to win GOTY twice.
These awards have become farcical over the years anyway!
Also my 2023 GOTY was Resident Evil 4 Remake because it was that good.
However, "Shadow of the Erdtree" is only a DLC I name. It is almost a standalone game, with the amount of content and the price it has.

Remake? It absolutely should be allowed. That's a significant undertaking. That's not just rerunning code through an upscaler and calling it a day.
