Here's a starter pack of Black Microbiologists. A work in progress as people are migrating over from other platforms. Let me know if you want to be added! https://go.bsky.app/EcYiqNV
Just started with BlueSky and the ability to share a creator list like this is excellent! I can’t wait to learn all sorts of new science things from you all.
I am sure I'll get blasted for this, but it's a real question. Why do we care whether our microbiologists are Black? Is it to elevate voices that have the weight of society against them? You're not suggesting there's Black science and White science? FFS, I hope it's the former. I'm good with that.
We care because we unfortunately live in a society that spent several centuries trying to convince itself that it can categorize human value based on human appearance, and excluded people who look like me out of education, science, and other intellectual pursuits. We have always found a way
through, sometimes in isolation, sometimes with heavy costs. But now we can find each other and bear that “weight of society” together in community. Science is hard in the best of circumstances. It’s even harder when folks act like you don’t belong.
Ok, so, I think that’s the first thing: you are trying to elevate accomplished Black science voices. But also trying to establish a community to help with that elevation, and with support. Great! Thank you for answering.
Oh, my pantomath heart can't even believe my luck in stumbling upon this starter pack. Thanks so much! Can't wait to learn about microbiology from immensely intelligent people!
