It looked too close to something Lego themselves can put out and it could confuse people into believing it was a real product.

Working with another Corpos IP is like playing legal roulette.

Any little thing could set their legal dep off.

So in the 70's, George Lucas couldn't get the rights to make a Flash Gordon movie, so he just took all his interests (sci-fi serials, westerns, samurai movies) and made Star Wars instead.

I usually prefer that rather than straight up fan-games. I think it’s cool when people can take something they really love, and change it just enough to where it’s their own distinct voice. It pays tribute while also being a way to go up to a new level creatively.

According to one of the former members of the development team, when commenting on the postmortem playthrough of the "Free the Band" demo, a few years ago, they did try to license the IP from The LEGO Group, but these talks ended up going nowhere.

It reminds me of Journey to Silius, a NES game, when Sunsoft was originally going to make it into a game based on The Terminator. The license talks and such went nowhere, so they retooled it into an original, legally distinct game, complete with its own story and whatnot.
