This is only a good move if you want to embrace defining their existence as a medical disorder, which would not actually be very helpful unless you're anti-trans.

Identity first is the more appropriate language for intrinsic characteristics.

Or use what an individual voices as their preference.

I agree, most people with it don't view it as a medical disorder. It's really important to realize though that for the sorts of hearts and minds that need to find change, medicalising trans is not going to help - and using that terminology does exactly that.

Then have that conversation with them, you don't need to switch to using medical psychology terms to do so - and in fact doing that might make things worse considering the levels of uneducated stigma about mental health rival those about gender that isn't neatly binary.

In other words, it’s not that they’re perceiving their in the wrong body. They know it. It’s the distress of knowing that you don’t fit into that M/F social construct. And this can be greatly eliminated if you live in a world where it is OK to be who you are however, you know yourself to be.
