This was a subplot in one of the Thursday Next books! (Not eBay specifically, but someone calling the literary detectives over an obviously forged Shakespeare manuscript that if I remember correctly was typewritten and had 20th-century pop culture references.)
“AI used to identify fake Rembrandt being sold out of the trunk of a car in a dark alleyway”
“It’s a good thing Dr. BeepBoop here told me this was a fake, you know, art piece or whatever, or I would have given that man millions for his car-trunk-Rembrandt!”
Oh no! How would we know that the painting sold on eBay by a guy whose expertise is “I dunno I’ve had it for 20 years it’s real I swear” is fake if it wasn’t for cutting edge AI? 🙄
