Aus has had exceptional medical research success & great inventions (cochlear implant, pacemaker, Gardasil etc). But we could absolutely use more talent. All smarty-pants welcome here. MAGA either need not apply, or leave that red hat at Kennedy airport. In the bin.

But some EU countries already have a far right government (e.g. Hungary, Italy) or a coalition with far right (e.g. the Netherlands, Slovakia), and many countries have had budget cuts in higher education and research (e.g. France, my own country).

I’ve definitely considered moving back to the UK but the visa fees for my partner would be £13k. Instead thinking we should move to Spain where visa fees for all three of us would be a fraction of that. (And perhaps less of a shock to the system from California.)

Lately, I have been impressed by how much has been invented in Sweden - mostly for the benefit of the whole world.
Alas, they did have a school shooting recently in which a Swede with a gun (not hard to get) shot immigrants from Syria who were there lo improve their Swedish (a school for adults)...

It’s a massively complex dilemma in the UK, and if this article from the Guardian has it right, it may be a matter of moving money to give those on benefits a less arduous way to get back to work, if they can-

If test free world was smart they’d offer many of these fired govt workers jobs in their services. We have some of the best trained and experienced intelligence, state dept, etc
