What I found most heart wrenching about this story was the lens in which romance and perspective create two parallel worlds that never intersect but are tangentially aware of each other

As the reader you witness the budding relationship of Brian and Laurie through both of the lens. They both sense seedling of interest but neither know how to navigate them

Anyways it’s pretty clear that Brian has something going on that affects his perception of reality. His perspective Laurie quickly becomes a source attraction and comfort. Something he’s not afforded at home with his alcoholic mother

Laurie however has less of a chemical imbalance implied, and more of a bad life choices record. Every scene where she notices some spark with Brian. Her mind wonders off to a warning from Jimmy or something her Dad said
