When I was a child, my mother decided to knit all 5 of us an aran jumper each.
When she'd finished mine (I was the youngest) she threw her knitting needles in the bin.
It put me off learning how to knit.
It just takes practice…and patience. I’ve knitted everything from socks, mitts, sweaters, toys, blankets in the last 40 years and still have to undo/start again because I’ve made a mistake.
my sister crochets and I swear she's a wizard. She just made a full sized sweater and she's constantly sending my those little stuffed animals and she!! Freehands them now!!! Edits patterns!!! Surely she's a witch. There is no other conclusion
wonderful glove tutorial by the rainey sisters. that said, I've made several prs over the yrs, full fingers, half fingers & just mitts. discovered I hate fingers more than grafting (learned to like it finally) so I just make fingerless mitts or mittens. lots of great patterns for both, many free.
if you download any of the rainey sister glove patterns from ravelry, the guide is also included.
this fingerless mitts pattern is free & its easy & well written. i just used one dk & made a longer cuff.
Thank you! The very idea terrifies me but maybe I can stir up a bit of courage and give it a try. (Dutch courage? Wonder if I could knit this while drinking Chardonnay?)
Sipping maybe. 😂. It’s just yarn. And it can be ripped back. Find a good knitter to ask questions when you get stuck. I got ya on this side. Seriously. Send pictures and questions. Picture of half finished sweater for your peace of mind. I also have a knitting podcast. I’m a great mediocre knitter
There is a pattern on Ravelry that is free that actually walks you thru the process. I’ll post it next on this thread. The other option is making a child’s sweater. Not as much of an investment in time or yarn. You can do this. Really.
Knitting is magic no matter what you make. If you can knit a scarf you already are a magician! You can put coded messages in those scarves like the British women did in WWII! Love takes a lot of forms and knitting is a great one. Keep at it!
You have to just dive right into new areas. Find a pattern you love and just learn as you go. YouTube and https://kittinghelp.com have always been my favorite helpful resources.
My favorite sweater patterns are the ones that are done top done. I find it far easier to make sure it all fits correctly.
I knit because I can’t stitch a straight line - even with a sewing machine 😊. I think we are lucky if we each find one craft that we love that loves us.
Cowls are a great way to start. So many free patterns available on Ravelry. They always look great. Learning how to knit on circular needles will open all kinds of doors.
I taught myself to knit during the pandemic. I don’t know how to do anything but a long-tail cast-on, still don’t know the right way to weave in yarn tails & have to have instructions for increases that lean left/right. Hardly “incredibly talented” iow. But I’ve made sweaters. You really can!
My mother crocheted and knitted sweaters, blankets, doilies, tablecloths. It was her escape. She was artistically talented. I inherited none of her aptitude, but I inherited many of her items.

When I “knit,” I just get a knot.
That’s why I quilt.
