Unrelated, sort of... Someone told me once that when doing certain astrophysics equations, pi actually gets rounded down to *1*. That at a certain point the scales get so big that even the precision of 3 vs 1 isn't important.

I guess if you’re making an order of magnitude calculation factor of 3 is no big deal…

For back of the envelope calculations I often use pi times 10 million for the number of seconds in a year.
Actually pretty close approximation!
