As sad as it is, it is the logical outcome of how the world(s) of FFXIV are. The game portray's it in quite a happy way, but truth is, it's far closer to real life in how dark and vile it can be than it would seem at first sight. There many powerful people with far more agenda than soul (...)

Ok. 1) I struggle with mental illness irl. As much as I try to breathe life into my WoL independently of myself, there’s going to be some bleed over.

2) I used to portray her as happy go lucky, but then I got “To Crush Your Enemies VII” - it’s 200,000 kills.

Think about that.

Even if you limit that to “fiends” that’s a death toll that would literally have your WoL wading in blood.

You’ve faced horrors at the end of the universe, and keep getting thrown at bigger and bigger horrors. And yes, it’s an MMO, but that would take a toll on anyone, even a hero.

If you met her, you’d find her warm and caring. She’s quick to press Gil into the palm of someone in need, or defend someone being attacked on the road.

She’s also a master craftswoman, selling her goods in the marketplace. She also teaches her former class trainers new moves, and trains newbies.

Sometimes the swords hanging on her wall drips onto her freshly scrubbed floors.

She’ll sometimes see the face of a lost loved one in a crowd and have to do a double take.

She gardens to cope.

I'm not into the whole OC thing much but I imagine largely because it's fiction and can create more interesting stories rather than everything being just okay with no problems to solve.

I'm not as sadistic towards my characters as some, but I do think pain and hardship fosters growth and change. Difficulties inspire innovation. I'm a sort of person who finds it much easier to be creative within constraints than with a blank page. Limitations are more interesting to me than powers.

That said, I certainly let my characters feel happy. I'm not fond of throwing drama into the mix for no reason. There needs to be a balance. A reason for happiness and a reason for loss. And the happier they are, the better the development will be when everything starts crashing down.
