I'm all for universal healthcare but WW literally declined Elliott's offer to pay for his care S1. It wasn't a show about paying for cancer, it was a show about mortality making a man confront a lifetime of perceived mediocrity and disappointment

Not for nothing but S1 kind of goes out of its way to make clear that pre-meth WW isn't a great guy. Self-important, full of resentments, quick to anger, etc. etc. "Mild-mannered high school teacher turns to drug trade out of desperation" this is not
maybe that’s why so many of them hate skylar so much. the last season is basically her getting him to admit he’s nothing more than a petty asshole. that bursts their bubble of believing he’s some hard done by anti-hero.
And using his impending mortality as an excuse to indulge every single amoral impulse.
Walter had countless opportunities to stop hurting his friends and family, to not be a complete scumbag, and every time he said "I'm gonna do it anyway".
He even managed to fuck up his own redemption arc.
Even without Elliot, his treatment was originally covered by his insurance until he and skylar decided to look around for ‘the best treatment’ which ended up being a doctor that wasnt covered by his insurance.

Having to pay for care definitely helped tip him over the edge but the show would not have changed dramatically if they had to think of something else

He clearly wanted to break bad
