i don’t even know if it’s a hype level yet. there is nothing a normal person can do with it and running a quantum computer at this point would actually be more expensive than AI

Eh, yes and no.

AI is a bubble & almost all of its applications are either a net negative or aren't worth the cost of creation. Quantum computing definitely has more potential.

Biggest issue w/ both are the security & privacy risks. Quantum computing could theoretically break all modern encryption

The issue with all this stuff is that it's still theoretical. You look at what NIST or Google or the Chinese government is investing in and it's defenses for weapons that aren't fully built yet.

Maybe (hopefully!) q-day never comes, but to not be prepared for it could be catastrophic.

Probably q-day? Y2K at least had a hard deadline and the international attention necessary to address it. Even if the solutions exist (post-quantum encryption or actual quantum encryption itself), who knows if it gets broad implementation.

But maybe q-day never happens at all, so who knows lol
