How did you get into designing? I've tried unsuccessfully to design a sweater for myself but have given up and defaulted to using a pattern

I've been knitting a lot of sweaters. For the dress it was a bit of a building blocks approach. I took a plain sweater pattern so that I would know how many stitches to cast on. The skirt was more trial and error than I hoped. Basically think of all the parts separately then bring them together 🤔
