Teams have always been punished for losing in conference championship games, even when it made no sense. See 2007 Mizzou not getting into a BCS bowl

Oh I know, it doesn't help that Penn State doesn't have a quality win either. We'll see how much they'll stick to their word when it comes to the outcome of conference championship games not impacting losing teams
